The three-dimensional (3D) virtual treatment planning and simulation of the patient with a dentofacial deformity are discussed.
Objectives: The aim of this report was to present an integrated 3-dimensional virtual treatment planning of orthognathic surgery in the clinical routine. Comparison between two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses was made.
Materials and methods: We have described the different stages of the 3D virtual treatment planning of orthognathic surgery comparing with traditional surgical planning. A summary of the advantages, disadvantages, and debates surrounding the methods are reviewed.
Results: Diagnoses based on three-dimensional analysis gave more information such as the possibility of comparing the right and left side of the patient.
Conclusions: The integrated 3D virtual approaches for the treatment of the patient with a maxillofacial deformity are discussed and compare comprehensively from our experience using 3D virtual treatment planning clinically. 3D virtual treatment planning has several advantages over traditional surgical planning.
Conflict of interest: None declared.
