SUMMARY
This textbook presents many clinical cases of indirect veneers – fabricated from porcelain and composite, as well as direct composite veneers. Each of these techniques has its own indications, but also limitations. Here, a summary of the most important advantages of both techniques is presented to help the dentist make an optimal decision in everyday practice.

ADVANTAGES OF DIRECT COMPOSITE VENEERS
They do not require a dental laboratory
They allow faster execution of esthetic restorations
They are more economical
Their repairs are much easier, and a chip or a defect can be modified quickly and without significant financial expense for the dental office
They allow for color or shape corrections when necessary (for example, when the patient is not satisfied with the final result)
In many clinical situations, tooth preparation is not required (no-prep composite veneers)
When performing composite veneers in the mandibular teeth, they perfectly fulfill the functional tasks related to the envelope of function (the composite material can be easily adjusted to avoid the constricted chewing pattern after treatment)
ADVANTAGES OF INDIRECT PORCELAIN VENEERS
When performing comprehensive treatment including multiple teeth, it is easier to control the overall smile esthetic (inclination of the axis of individual teeth, the relationship of the central incisors to the lateral incisors, etc.)
Covering discoloration is more predictable, as the dental technician has more options to achieve this
More durable due to the extraoral fabrication process and easier finishing of the material
Their esthetics do not depend profoundly on the manual and esthetic skills of the dentist, but more on the initial planning, cooperation with the dental laboratory, and know-how of the dental technician fabricating the final restorations
The table on the following page is helpful for practitioners as it includes the parameters for discussion while selecting the type of restoration, ie, between a direct composite veneer and an indirect porcelain veneer.
Table 10-1 Parameters for selecting veneers
| Parameter for discussion | Direct composite veneers | Indirect porcelain veneers |
| Patient’s age | Adolescent patients are also an indication due to the minimal invasiveness and ease of performing corrections at the patient’s growth stage |
