The result of all cases was; improved mandibular function, adequate facial contour, improvement of the upper airway and a decrease of the surgical time.
Airway management to perform surgical procedures in the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty becomes difficult in different situations. The reason may be diverse pathologies or conditions of the patient impedimenting the appropriate mouth opening. It becomes a challenge for the anesthesiologist to guaranty the airway. Therefore, in the last years, many devices have been design to help the intubation in difficult circumstances. Recently, in 2002, the Venezuelan doctor, Douglas Cedeño, design a video endoscope method labeled VEL 70°, wich improves the field of vision. The present literature revision has as objective to analyze the use of VEL 70° in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The airway management in newborns patient and infants with craniofacial anomalies facial dismorfia, as well as patients with condilar anquilosis, different tumors and facial trauma that difficult mouth opening is difficult. Therefore it is necessary that these patients require special equipment and techniques to assure the airway. The VEL 70° due to its characteristics to access the larynx with a widened vision trough the endoscope of 70°, 4 mm × 18 cm of length, introduced through an laringoscope, it permits to analyze a video laringoscopy with less trauma to the airway, without hyper extending the neck, or needing a mouth opening of more than 2 cm, becoming the technique of choice to the elected treatment of the difficult airway.
