James Moore, 1935-2014

Dr James Moore, of Garland, Tex, died after an extended illness on March 28, 2014. He was born in Fort Worth on August 25, 1935, to Walter Curley and Lottie Elia Moore of Marshall, Tex. He graduated from Marshall High School, North Texas State University, and Baylor Dental College. He served in the US Army Dental Corps and then returned to Baylor to study orthodontics.

Jim and I became classmates and friends in 1966 when we entered orthodontic training in the seventh class of the Baylor Orthodontic Department. It did not take long to recognize the intellectual eminence and professional commitment that Jim naturally and enthusiastically displayed. After working with him for 2 years in the Baylor program, I had no doubt that he was the most proficient in our class and one of the most accomplished orthodontists that Baylor has ever produced. Dr Gaylord, the program chairman, acknowledged Jim’s unusual sagacity and skill by enlisting him as a faculty member for over 34 years.

In his leisure hours, Jim loved nothing more than developing his skills at golf, and he finally accomplished that enviable but seldom achieved hole in one. It always seemed to me that whatever Jim devoted himself to, he excelled. He was extraordinary in every sense of the word, and my feeble attempt to define him with words can never clarify his personality with the richness it deserves.

Jim was greatly esteemed by his professional colleagues, loved by his family, cherished by his friends, and profoundly appreciated by his patients, who benefited from his extraordinary skills. All of us will remain subdued by the breadth and depth of the emptiness that his death leaves, but his legacy of devotion to family, fidelity to friends, and professional engagement will always serve as a beacon of exemplary behavior to those who knew and benefited from his presence.

Jim is survived by his wife, Linda Freeman Moore, 4 children, and 5 grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Baylor Oral Health Foundation c/o: “Just One Moore Smile” Fund, 3600 Gaston Ave, #1151, Dallas, TX 75246 (write “Just One Moore Smile” in the memo line of your check).
