6 – Treatment Planning Options

Chapter 6

MANAGEMENT OPTIONS

There are nine treatment options available for patients with failed restorative dentistry, namely:

  • Decline to treat.
  • Refer.
  • Maintain – trying to accept the existing restorations.
  • Complete dentures.
  • Overdentures.
  • Partial dentures.
  • Removal of the remaining teeth with restoration on osseointegrated prostheses.
  • Re-restoration on natural roots.
  • Re-restoration using both natural roots and osseointegrated fixtures.

The treatment option adopted depends upon the:

  • General medical condition of the patient.
  • Disease susceptibility.
  • Patient’s motivation.
  • Operator’s ability.
  • Environment.

It is imperative that the clinician is realistic and allows adequate time for treatment planning.
