Thrombophilia of the temporomandibular joint: (C)lot’s to think about

Contributing factors to arthritides of the temporomandibular joint remain unclear in the twenty-first century. This abstract advances the medical model in describing thrombophilia, hypercoagulability, and endothelial dysfunction as a major intersection point of the multifactoral processes which can contribute risk to breakdown of the temporomandibular joint. The discussion will concentrate on the disease/disorder profile of the patient who may be positive for thrombophilia. The program would help familiarize participants with the appropriate TM joint exam, correlations with painful disease entities demonstrated on MRI of the TM joint. Attendees will learm how to order appropriate blood studies, MRI with gadolinium contrast, and familiarize them with the questionnaire which targets prothrombic states. Treatment strategies will be advanced as related to this topic.
