Prospective assessment of outcomes following disposable arthroscopy of the TMJ

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a common cause of chronic facial pain which is often successfully managed non-operatively. When this management is unsuccessfull arthroscopy may be considered as a therapeutic and diagnostic tool. This prospective clinical study assessed the outcome of 115 arthroscopic procedures using a 1.2 mm disposable (On-Point) arthroscope to assess the effectiveness and reliability of this small diametre scope. All patients had failed to improve following standardized conservative management. Discharge from clinic was classed as a successfull outcome. Improvements in pain scores were 68.5%, improvements in mouth opening were 18.8% and overall success rates of 76.4% were recorded. Compared with a previous study utilizing a 1.9 mm scope the 1.2 mm scope gave fewer complications.
