History of orthodontic education

The Centennial Guest Editorial by Dr Henry W. Fields in the July 2015 issue provided superb reading about the evolution of orthodontic education over the last 100 years. In his essay, Dr Fields noted that “New York City was the site of the first 2 sustainable [orthodontic] programs at Columbia University and New York University in 1922.” I would like to mention that the orthodontic program at the University of Pennsylvania was established a few years earlier, in 1916, by the eminent Dr John V. Mershon. In fact, the Penn Orthodontic Alumni Association is planning a gala celebration next year to commemorate our 100th anniversary.
