Experience of using ultrasonic resorbable system in treatment of patients with traumatic injury of face skeleton bones

Introduction : Application of the ultrasonic resorbable system Sonic Weld by KLS Martin Group gives new opportunities for osteosynthesis of face skeleton bones.

Objective : Enhancement of efficiency in treatment of patients with posttraumatic deformity and face skeleton bones defects with the help of ultrasound-associated osteosynthesis.

Materials and methods : Since 2010 till 2013 surgical treatment of 33 patients with face skeleton bones defects and deformity was carried out. The age of patients ranges between 17 and 60 years. Among them: 20 patients with defects and deformity of cheekbone–nose–forehead–eyepit complex, 11 patients with defects of the upper ridge, 2 patients with defects of the low jaw after removal of nonmalignant tumour. The autogenous bones, as well as the individually made silicone implants were used as plastic material. The fixation was performed by means of the ultrasonic resorbable system, which included two main parameters: (1) bioresorbable fixator (plates and pins) made of 100% polylactic acid; (2) ultrasound head for fixation of pins. The of postsurgical period included computer tomography (CT) of the face skeleton bones on the third day, after 6 months, and after 24 months. According to CT, the growth of the bone tissue takes place in parallel with the resorption of plates and pins.

Discussion and conclusion : In neither case we met change transplant and implants configuration, as well as displacement of plates and pins. The rigid fixation of bone fragments was observed. The use of ultrasound-associated osteosynthesis allows to reach good aesthetic and functional results in patients with posttraumatic deformity and face skeleton bones defects. The SonicWeld Rx system proved itself to be a quick and simple method of face skeleton bones fixation.
