The outcome of dental implant treatment is influenced by four inter-related factors (Figure 1) – the patient, the clinician, the biomaterials used, and the treatment approach (Buser and Chen 2008). In this regard, the clinician’s role is central to achieving predictable outcomes whilst minimizing risk to the patient. At the outset, the clinician is responsible for assessing and diagnosing the patient’s clinical condition and suitability for treatment. The clinician must then select the most appropriate biomaterials to use and recommend the most appropriate treatment approach.
