Since it was introduced by Perthes in 1924 and with it’s different modifications (Obwegesser 1955, Dalpont 1961, Wolford 1985) through-out the years, the mandibular sagittal split osteotomy has been the most reliable osteotomy to correct 3D mandibular discrepancies.
The purpose of this paper is to present the practitioner with a variety of different technical tips to obtain great splits every time a mandibular sagittal split osteotomy is performed.
With the author’s experience of more than 1700 splits, different pearls of wisdom are presented from the way the cutting instruments are angled and placed to the position of the splitting instruments to obtain favorable splits and avoid technical complications.
