Secondary rhinoplasty in cleft lip nasal deformities

Background and objectives: A secondary correcting cleft lip nasal deformity is a challenge due to its complex nature. The aim of this study is to present our experience of secondary rhinoplasty in cleft lip nasal deformities.

Materials and methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 30 patients (13 males and 17 females aged from 7 to 32) operated for cleft lip nasal deformity in our institute between 2004 and 2012. 25 patients had unilateral cleft lip nasal deformities and 5 patients had bilateral cleft lip nasal deformities. 19patients had unilateral nasal obstruction. Open rhinoplasty was used for all patient.

Results: 24 patients were satisfied with more normal anatomic position, symmetrical projection of both alar domes, elongation of the columella and better nasal tip projection. 8 patients still have had a nasal obstruction and 6 patients had hypoplasia of nostrils.

Conclusion: Many different techniques have been used over the years to correct such deformities. Despite a plethora of surgical approaches aimed at correcting the cleft nose defect, no one procedure has been universally satisfactory in the repair of nasal deformities associated with cleft lip abnormalities.
