Rehablilitation in patients after treatment of BRONJ (bis-phosphonate-related ostenonecrosis of the jaw) on an epidemilogical background

Background and objectives : BRONJ seems to be a rising entity in maxillofacial surgery, especially when focusing on oral anti-resorptive therapy. Literature of the past decade focused on diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of BRONJ. There is a lack of knowledge on the oral rehabilitation after healed BRONJ.

Methods : Based on an systematic review of the literature, epidemiologic characteristics of BRONJ are given. Two cases on a two-year-follow-up on oral rehabilitation after BRONJ with dental implants are presented.

Results : The number of patients with BRONJ is rising. The patients in the case studies showed neither implant loss or signs of inflammation, nor new BRONJ disease.

Conclusions : BRONJ is a rising entity in maxillofacial surgery. Successful rehabilitation in patients after BRONJ is possible. Further evaluation of treatment protocols for patients after BRONJ is needed.

Acknowledgements : Part of the presented material originates from the master thesis of Andrea Zebuhr (in preparation).
