Organisations

British Dental Association (BDA)

The British Dental Association is the professional association and registered trade union organisation for dentists in the United Kingdom. Its stated mission is to ‘promote the interests of members, advance the science, arts and ethics of dentistry and improve the nation’s oral health’.

Care Quality Commission (CQC)

The Care Quality Commission is an executive non‐departmental public body of the Department of Health and Social Care of the United Kingdom. It was established in 2009 to regulate and inspect health and social care services in England.

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)

A professional association for human resource management professionals.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI)

The Chartered Management Institute is a professional institution for management based in the United Kingdom.

Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors (COPDEND)

A committee of all Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors in the UK. It oversees postgraduate training for dentists; European Economic Area and overseas dentists and workforce development.

Community Dental Service (CDS)

Community Dental Services provide treatment for people who may not otherwise seek or receive dental care, such as people with learning disabilities, elderly housebound people, people with mental or physical health problems or other disabling conditions which prevent them from visiting a general dental practitioner.

Deaneries

Postgraduate medical and dental training is available for all doctors and dentists in England. The teams that do this work in HEE, are now part of local teams. They may also be referred to as Post Graduate Medical and Dental Education or healthcare education (HET) teams.

Dental Complaints Service (DCS)

The Dental Complaints Service (DCS) is a team of trained advisers whose aim to help private dental patients and professionals settle complaints about private dental care fairly and efficiently. Funded by the GDC, the DCS provides a free and impartial service to mediate between patient and professional.

Dentists’ Health Support Trust (DHST)

The Dentists’ Health Support Trust offers dentists in difficulty an opportunity to remedy their problems, get their life back on track and, where possible, back into practice. The Trust provides a number of services including: responding to enquiries, which may lead to intervention, assessments, and treatment pathways followed by ongoing monitoring and support. This support is extended to families and colleagues of the dental professional in difficulty.

Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)

Supports ministers in leading the nation’s health and social care to help people live more independent, healthier lives for longer. DHSC is a ministerial department, supported by 29 agencies and public bodies. Prior to 2018 known as Department of Health.

European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC)

The European Mentoring and Coaching Council provides coaching and mentoring professional accreditation, as well as support and guidance to the coaching and mentoring profession and for its members.

General Dental Council (GDC)

The General Dental Council is the UK‐wide statutory regulator of members of the dental team. Its primary purpose is to protect patient safety and maintain public confidence in dental services. To achieve this, the Council registers qualified dental professionals, set standards for the dental team, investigates complaints about dental professionals’ fitness to practise, and works to ensure the quality of dental education.

Health Board (HB)

There are 14 regional NHS Boards in Scotland which are responsible for the protection and the improvement of their population’s health and for the delivery of frontline healthcare services.
There are seven NHS Health Boards in Wales which plan, secure and deliver healthcare services in their areas.

Health Education England (HEE)

Health Education England is an executive non‐departmental public body of the Department of Health and Social Care. Their function is to provide national leadership and coordination for the education and training within the health and public health workforce within England. It has been operational since June 2012.

Healthwatch England (HWE)

Healthwatch England is the independent national champion for people who use health and social care services. There is a local Healthwatch in every area of England.

Institute of Dentistry (IoD)

Institute of Dentistry is one of the six institutes of Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM)

The Institute of Leadership & Management is a professional membership body for leaders and managers.

International Coach Federation (ICF)

The International Coach Federation is a non‐profit organisation dedicated to professional coaching. As of July 2020, ICF has approximately 41 500 members in 147 countries and territories.

Local Area Team (LAT)

NHS England regional teams. There are seven regions in England who support local systems to provide more joined up and sustainable care for patients. Regional teams are responsible for the quality, financial and operational performance of all NHS organisations in their region, they draw on the expertise and support of the corporate teams to improve services for patients and support local transformation.

Local Dental Committee (LDC)
