Diagnosis of Periodontal Healing Complications

Diagnosis of Periodontal Healing Complications

OBJECTIVES

1 Recognize the radiographic signs of the three resorption types which may affect the root surface after trauma.

2 Identify time periods following traumatic injuries when the various resorption types are likely to occur.

3 Recognize the existence of transient marginal breakdown.

REPAIR-RELATED RESORPTION (SURFACE RESORPTION)

This resorption entity represents the healing response to a localized injury in the PDL, affecting the cells adjacent to the root surface (see page 12). The typical situation where repair-related resorption occurs appears to be concussion and lateral luxation (Figures A–D).28,29 It can also occur following intrusion and replantation, where it may affect all parts of the root, and in root fractures, where it is seen next to the fracture line.30 Repair-related/>
