Curriculum

Figure 4.1 Interrelation between the four domains

Within each domain, individual competency statements are grouped within themes known as ‘major competencies’. Each of the major competencies also contain further specific, supporting ‘minor competencies’ that describe the skills and attributes expected of the FD. Therefore, to successfully complete FT you are expected to successfully demonstrate each of the documented competencies. To ensure that this is achieved, all teaching and assessment tools are mapped to the competencies. The Interim Curriculum and Assessment Framework Guidance for Dental Foundation Training has been developed to allow you to identify what outcomes are expected to have been achieved by the end of FT.

The COPDEND UK Dental Foundation Training Curriculum76 was originally designed to encompass 2 years of Dental Foundation Training. As this is no longer the case, COPDEND has outlined their intention to formally revise the curriculum to best meet ‘the contemporary needs of new dental graduates in the critical period of transition to assured and proficient independent NHS practice’.77

Although outlining each minor competency is outwith the scope of this book, reference has been made to minor competencies throughout the content of this book where relevant. Table 4.1 lists an example of a minor competency belonging to each major competency and domain along with a summary of how it can be evidenced together with the tools used to assess it.78
