3D imaging and dentistry. From multiplanar cephalometry to guided navigation in implantology

The authors and editors have provided orthodontists a reference textbook with an overview of 3D volumetric imaging as it relates to clinical orthodontics, 3D technology, and all fields of dentistry. There are many excellent illustrations that aid the text, particularly in the early chapters, and make the subject of 3D technology in dentistry much more interesting and relevant. Each chapter, except the last, is well referenced in both 2D and 3D radiography. This book is divided into 13 chapters, with the first 3 chapters devoted to an overview of 3D technology, its uses in dentistry, its growth and development, and an atlas of the 3D anatomy of the maxilla and mandible. Chapters 4 to 6 are devoted to cephalometrics and describe a new, simplified approach for a cephalometric 3D analysis of both hard and soft tissues. Chapters 6 through 12 deal with specific areas of dentistry including TMJ, airway, impacted teeth, periodontology, endodontics, and computer-assisted guided surgery. The final chapter briefly discusses the medico-legal issues in cone-beam computed tomography. The organization of all of these topics into a single text makes it a good reference for orthodontists and aids the transition from 2D to 3D radiography.

Dr Giovanna Perrotti is head of the Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry Unit at IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Milan, Italy. Professor Tiziano Testori is a fellow in oral and implant surgery at the University of Miami in Florida, and a professor of the Faculty of Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics, and the head of the Implantology and Oral Rehabilitation Unit at the dental clinic in the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi in Milan. They both have extensive experience in orthodontics and implantology, respectively. Dr Massimiliano Politi is completing a PhD in orthodontics from the University of Milan and devotes much of his time to 3D research in diagnostics.
