appendix C Surgical Trays

It is very important that all the appropriate instruments are on the correct trays in the correct order so you can anticipate the doctor’s actions. The following is a list of the instruments contained on all six kinds of surgical trays:

1. Implant placement

2. Stage II implant uncovering

3. Implant prosthetics

4. Ridge preservation

5. Maxillary sinus grafting

6. Ridge augmentation and/or osteotomes

When the doctor enters the room, proceed in this order:

1. Post all x-rays, FMX, panorex, and bitewings on CDR.

2. Have the appropriate instrumentation ready for the procedure.

3. Review the health history, noting any changes.

4. Pre-medicate the patient if necessary.

5. Place the napkin around the patient’s neck.

6. Position the chair.

7. Hand the doctor topical on a 2 x 2 gauze pad.

8. Hand the doctor the syringe with warm anesthetic.

9. Have additional carpules or anesthetic ready if needed.

10. Comfort the patient. Hold the patient’s hand if you think it will help. Reassure the patient that everything will be fine.

11. Divert the patient’s attention away from procedure with an interesting conversation.

12. Ask the patient, “Are you okay?”

13. After the injection, allow the patient to rinse.
