| 1. Assemble equipment. | Manufacturers’ instructions must be followed. When the tester rheostat is separate from the applicator tip, an assistant is needed. |
| 2. Review health history. | Use of the electric pulp tester is contraindicated for a client with a pacemaker or any electronic life-support device because it can interfere with the device’s function and pose a serious health threat. |
| 3. Describe the test’s purpose and methods. | This familiarizes the client with the procedure. For some pulp testers, the client lightly holds the handle with the gloved clinician to complete the circuit. |
