  • Allows for automated, mechanical respiratory assistance to the patient

Common Ventilator Modes

  • Volume Controlled Ventilation
    • The patient is ventilated at a set volume regardless of inspiratory effort
  • Pressure Control Ventilation
    • The patient is ventilated at a set pressure regardless of inspiratory effort
  • Synchronized Intermittent‐Mandatory Ventilation (Figure 1.20)
    • The ventilator will deliver a set number of breaths per minute
    • Also allows for spontaneous breathing by the patient
    • Ideally synchronized to spontaneous efforts
