Vasoconstrictors

  • Most local anesthetics cause vasodilation via direct smooth muscle relaxation of arterioles. Vasoconstrictors assist in keeping the local anesthetic in the site longer by reducing vascular uptake
    • Cocaine is the only local anesthetic that causes peripheral vasoconstriction
  • Types
    • Epinephrine
      • Most commonly
        • 1 : 50 000
        • 1 : 100 000 (Figure 9.5)
        • 1 : 200 000
    • Levonordefrin – alpha‐methylnorepinephrine
      • Most commonly 1 : 20 000
