Vasoconstrictors
- Most local anesthetics cause vasodilation via direct smooth muscle relaxation of arterioles. Vasoconstrictors assist in keeping the local anesthetic in the site longer by reducing vascular uptake
- Cocaine is the only local anesthetic that causes peripheral vasoconstriction
