Submental intubation: a literature review

We appreciate the correspondence from Gadre and Kushte regarding our review article recently published in Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg.

We would like to mention to the authors that their manuscript was included in our screening review but was subsequently excluded for the following reasons.

The technique was not significantly modified from the original description by Hernandez ; indications were not clearly defined; duration of the procedure was not included; no complications were reported.

In their manuscript, Gadre and Kushte describe the submental or transmylohyoid intubation technique as described by Hernandez in 1986 and demonstrate success in five patients. In essence, as similar to others, it lacked essential information pertinent to the measured variables. We recognize that the terminology ‘transmylohyoid’ could have been added in our methodology of search and we are grateful to the authors for bringing this to our attention.

We thank Drs. Gadre and Kushte for their advocacy on this topic and for helping patients avoid tracheostomy when submental intubation is indicated.
