The availability of alloplastic total TMJ prostheses which are safe and effective has improved the treatment of patients requiring reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint. There have been over 10 years of experience with both patient-fitted (TMJ Concepts) and stock (Biomet) alloplastic TMJ prostheses. Both types of prostheses have proven to provide reconstruction of the TMJ which results in stable occlusion, good range of motion, and decreased pain.

Alloplastic TMJ reconstruction may be indicated for patients who have severe TMJ degenerative joint diseases, tumors, development anomalies, ankylosis, or failed previous alloplastic reconstruction. This presentation will review the indications, surgical techniques, outcomes, and complications associated with reconstruction of the TMJ using a stock prosthesis. The advantages and disadvantages of using a stock prosthesis will be discussed. Several cases will be presented to illustrate the use of the prostheses.
