Preoperative Pulmonary Testing
- Pulmonary preoperative testing is rarely indicated and is becoming increasingly less utilized for non‐cardiothoracic procedures [9]
- Little to no guidelines on the following tests and their usefulness preoperatively prior to noncardiac surgery
Chest Radiography
- Function
- Images the heart, lungs, airways, major vasculature, diaphragm, and pleural space of the chest
- Clinical Indications
- Consider new preoperative chest radiograph if symptoms are significantly worsening or if they are diagnosed with poorly controlled
- Preoperative chest radiograph, if not available in clinically relevant timeframe, recommended
- Radiation to chest
- Chemotherapy with toxic pulmonary agents
- Previous significant pulmonary infection
- Tuberculosis
- Histoplasmosis
- Respiratory infection requiring ICU admission
Pulmonary Function Testing
- Function
- Records volume, flow rates, and function of the lungs (Figure 3.9)
