Forty adult male rabbits ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) received, under general anaesthesia, bilateral parietal ostectomies with a 6 mm trephine bur to create full thickness critical size defects. The animals were divided into four groups, as follows:

Group I:	Bone defect filled with blood clot
Group II:	Autogenous bone graft harvested from the contralateral side
Group III:	High density porous polyethylene implant (Medpor)
Group IV:	Calcium phosphate cement (Norian CRS)
