Evaluation of current zirconia primers for zirconia bonding

Objectives : Traditional HF etching and silane treatment is not effective for improving the bonding towards zirconia ceramics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bonding ability of current zirconia bonding agents.

Materials and methods : Zirconia (Cercon) disks were sandblasted by alumina (50 μm), then cleaned by de-ionized water and dried. According to manufacturers’ instructions, zirconia surface was applied commercial primers and proceeded cementations using ultradent jig methods, i.e. Z PRIME+ /Duolink (Bisco), Clearfil Ceramic Primer/Panavia F2.0 (Kuraray), AZ Primer/ResiCem (Shofu), Metal/Zirconia Primer/Multilink Automix (Ivoclar Vivadent), and Monobond Plus/Multilink Automix (Ivoclar Vivadent). Cements were either light cured for 40 s or self-cured for 10 min at 37 °C. The cured specimens were then stored for 2 h at 37 °C in de-ionized water and tested until failure using a universal tester (Instron 4466) at a speed of 1 mm/min.

Results :

Zirconia bonding primer SBS in MPa (SD) cement self-cured SBS in MPa (SD) cement light-cured

Clearfil Ceramic Primer (Kuraray) 8.9 (4.0) b, A 7.5 (4.5) c, A
AZ Primer (Shofu) 12.5 (5.9) b, A 21.2 (8.3) ab, B
Metal/Zirconia Primer (Ivoclar Vivadent) 8.2 (2.0) b, A 16.3 (5.0) b, B
