  • Traverses the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone
  • Special Sensory
    • Smell

CN II (Optic)

  • Traverses the optic foramen of the sphenoid bone
  • Special Sensory
    • Vision

CN III (Oculomotor)

  • Originates in the midbrain
  • Traverses the superior orbital fissure of the sphenoid bone
  • Motor
    • Eye movement
      • Superior rectus m.
      • Inferior rectus m.
      • Medial rectus m.
      • Inferior oblique m.
    • Pupillary constriction
      • Circular m.
    • Pupillary accommodation
      • Ciliary m.
    • Raises eyelid
      • Levator palpebrae superioris m.

CN IV (Trochlear)

  • Originates in the midbrain
  • Traverses the superior orbital fissure of the sphenoid bone
  • Motor
    • Eye movement down and abducted
      • Superior oblique m.

CN V (Trigeminal)

  • Originates in the midbrain, pons, and medulla
  • Forms the trigeminal ganglion
  • Diverges into Three Branches: (Figure 2.5)
    • Ophthalmic branch (V1)
    • Maxillary branch (V2)
    • Mandibular branch (V3)
