Handpiece is run by air pressure at a maximum speed of 450,000 rotations per minute.
On high-speed handpiece, bur generates extreme amount of heat.
Instrument sprays water/air or air on bur for cooling purposes to prevent damage to pulp.
Different styles of securing bur are available:
Conventional chuck—Need to secure bur and loosen bur in handpiece
