High-Speed Handpiece

Characteristics 
Handpiece is run by air pressure at a maximum speed of 450,000 rotations per minute.
On high-speed handpiece, bur generates extreme amount of heat.
Instrument sprays water/air or air on bur for cooling purposes to prevent damage to pulp.
Different styles of securing bur are available:
Power lever chuck
Push-button chuck
Conventional chuck—Need to secure bur and loosen bur in handpiece
Practice Note 
Handpiece attaches to tubing on dental unit.
High-Speed Handpiece must be lubricated according to the manufacturer’s recommendation, cleaned, bagged individually, and then sterilized. A chemical/steam indicator device should be included in the wrapping.
