16.1 INTRODUCTION
In the field of dental implantology, the effective management of conflicts and complaints is not only a professional duty but also a critical factor in providing optimal patient care. The overarching principle guiding this aspect of patient management is to prevent conflicts and complaints by ensuring that patient expectations align with the outcomes of their implant treatment. This fundamental approach serves as a proactive strategy to maintain patient satisfaction and minimise the occurrence of disputes. However, even with the best intentions and meticulous planning, conflicts and complaints can still arise in dental implantology. These incidents, while challenging, can be reduced to a minimum by implementing several essential measures. One of the primary strategies is to ensure that the dental team is well prepared and appropriately trained to perform implant procedures competently. A well‐trained team is more likely to deliver successful treatments, thereby mitigating the risk of patient dissatisfaction and disputes. It is crucial that every team member operates within their defined scope of practice, acknowledging their individual responsibilities and limitations. Moreover, it is essential to recognise that a well‐managed conflict can lead to improved treatment outcomes for the patient and serve as a valuable learning experience for the dental team. Rather than viewing conflicts solely as adversities, they can be seen as opportunities for growth, refinement and enhancement of the practice’s overall quality of care.
Dental professionals seeking more detailed information on complaints and complaint handling can refer to guidance provided by reputable sources such as Dental Protection, the Dental Complaints Service, or the Care Quality Commission (CQC). These resources offer valuable insights into best practices for addressing patient concerns and resolving conflicts effectively.
