Zygomatic implant used for mandibular rehabilitation after tumor resection

Introduction: Ameloblastoma is one of the most resecative indication common tumor in the mandible that challenge surgeons to develop ways to reconstruct and rehabilitate patients.

Objective: The objective of this case was to provide a very poor patient mandibular teeth rehabilitation after hemimandibulectomy.

Aim: Certify that even when circumstances are extremely unfavorables it is still possible to deal with the resources available.

Case report: A very poor 52y.o. female patient presented a huge ameloblastoma with indication of resection after biopsy at OMS departament of Rocha Faria State Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. As a public hospital, resources are extremely limited and the only study available was a CT scan. No microsurgical devices were available.

A prototype was made for free in a public institution in other state, reconstruction hardware was donated by a company and the zygomatic implant was donated by a surgeon of the team in order to have the surgery done.

Purpose: To resect tumor and reconstruct and create means of masticatory rehabilitation performed at the same surgical time.

Result: Patient received two implants and had her function reestablished.

Conclusion: Zygomatic implant can be used as an alternative or temporary method to rehabilitate mandibular teeth after big resection when no other preferable method is available.
