Maxillofacial injuries at Suratthani Hospital: a review of 4755 patients K. Janvanissthaporn

Thai J Oral Maxillofac Surg 2008: 22(2): 106–115 A retrospective study was performed on maxillofacial injuries of 4755 patients treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division of Dental Department, Suratthani Regional Hospital from 1992 to 2006 (15 years). The results showed that the most commonly affected age group was 21–30 years old (32.2%). The ratio of male to female was 3.5:1. Most injuries were caused by road traffic accident (73.8%) followed by violent assault (12.2%). The injuries occurred more frequently in the mandible (37.6%), followed by zygoma (20.5%) and nasal bone (14.5%). Regarding the distribution of mandibular fractures, 18.4% were in the symphysis, 21.9% in the parasymphysis and 21.4% in the mandibular angle. The most common treatment was closed reduction. Postoperative complication was uncommon (2.5%). Infection was the most frequent complication. There were 2403 patients (50.5%) having associated injuries. Head injuries (42.7%) were most commonly found, followed by lower extremities (7.5%) and upper extremities (5.8%).
