Removal of wood rooted in orbit

This is a clinical presentation and management of an unusual orbit injury caused by wooden pieces. A 41-year-old male was referred to the oral and maxillofacial team at Al Mafraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE. He had fallen from a height and landed on a rough terrain. Physical examination revealed wooden pieces entering the floor of the orbit Radiological examination through a C.T. scan revealed organic foreign bodies mixed with blood in the right floor of the orbit entering the right maxillary sinus Under general anaesthesia three pieces of wood were removed. The orbital floor defect was identified and right maxillary sinus lavage and fibreoptic inspection was done. The nasolacrimal duct was intact. The orbital floor was reconstructed with star shaped titanium plate. The globe was intact and the vision was not affected. Publications of wooden foreign bodies in the orbit were scarce in the oral and maxillofacial literature. Graham et al. (2008) reported in his literature review four cases and his was the fifth. It is usual for these injuries to present late, contrary to this case. In view of the anatomical areas that were involved, this case illustrates that for a most successful treatment a multidisciplinary approach is recommended.
