Histological and histomorphometric evaluation of calvarial bone grafts for alveolar ridge reconstruction in dental implantology

Aim: To evaluate histological and histomorphometric findings of calvarial split bone grafts for alveolar ridge reconstruction in dental implantology.

Methods: Alveolar ridge reconstruction was performed using calvarial bone grafts in 16 patients. Forty-nine implants were inserted. A total of 22 biopsies had been taken 6 months after augmentation. Histological and histomorphometric findings of bone specimen had been analysed. Success rates of bone grafts and dental implants as well as complications were clinically recorded.

Results: Implant survival rate was 96%. Wound dehiscence occurred in 3 cases. There was no graft loss observed. Only minor signs of graft resorption were found. The amount of vital bone of the specimen in the cancellous portion was 34.51% and 15.19% in the cortical portion 6 months after augmentation.

Conclusion: The high amount of non-vital bone reveals slow graft healing of calvarial bone transplants and might be a reason for minor graft resorption.
