Frequency and distribution of ameloblastoma according to age, sex and histopathologic type, at Department of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, January 2002–December 2010

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency and distribution of ameloblastoma cases at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic of Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia, according to age, sex and histopathologic result.

Method: This research is descriptive retrospective design. Patient’s data was collected from medical record’s of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital, in the period of 8 years, between January 2002 and December 2010

Result: Ninety-one patients diagnosed as ameloblastoma according to histopathologic examination during that period. Most of them was found in mandible, only one case of 91 cases found in maxilla. Follicular type was the highest type as in 23 cases (25.27%) followed by the Plexiform type 21 cases (23.07%) and by other types such as Plexiform–follicular 20 cases (21.98%), Acantomatous 5 cases (5.49%), Plexiform–acantomatous 5 cases (5.49%) and others. Every histopathologic type found more in woman than man, such as Plexiform type in 61.09%. There are slightly difference of ameloblastoma cases found between woman and man: in woman 50 cases (54.94%) and man 41 cases (45.06%). Ameloblastoma commonly occurs in the age group of 31–50 years old, with 10 years group interval. There are 3 cases found in the children under 10 years old, where the youngest was a 5 years old boy.

Conclusion: Ameloblastoma frequently presented in mandible, and adolescent period but could also found in children, more frequent in woman and are predominantly follicular or Plexiform in histopathologic type.
