CAMS (computer asissted model surgery)

Planning is the basis of success in orthognathic surgery, which consists of a series of sequential steps that allow the surgeon to propose a treatment plan. It is very important to provide an accurate recording and mounting of plaster models, which will be mounted on a semi-adjustable articulator, where model surgery will take place. The advancement of knowledge and technology has shown that the use of the facebow to transfer the maxillary position in all three dimensions to the articulator is one of the most important and delicate steps and where there are major failure. The articulator is also regarded as an arbitrary instrument, All this eventually leads to unexpected results. Furthermore, the model surgery technique is cumbersome, time-consuming, and error-prone. Therefore, there is a need to create a device that fixes and improves the conventional technique. we describe CAMS, a system using CAD–CAM technology and robotics that can eliminate sources of error by eliminating the transfer of the facebow record to a semi-adjustable and arbitrary articulator and that transfers surgical planning to the device. CAMS’s objectives are: automatic and three-dimensional positioning of the plaster models obtained from the patient’s CAMS data. Performing orthognathic robotic model surgery. Manufacturing surgical splints.
