Assessment of the location of the mandibular foramen (MF) in analysis of mandible computed tomography (CT) images

Introduction: Assessment of the topography of the mandibular foramen has a significant cognitive and utilitarian meaning. Numerous aspects of the location of MF are known and used at anesthesia performance of the inferior alveolar nerve in surgery of this region. Due to usage of the newest methods of anatomical visualization current knowledge of the topography of MF may be completed and verified.

Aim of the study: The aim of the study is an assessment of MF depending on anatomical structure of mandible. The location of this foramen is correlated with inclination of mandibular ramus. Analysis was conducted depending on the location of the plane of mandibular ramus in relation to mandibular corpus in three directions – anteroposterior, transversal and vertical.

Materials and methods: The research was conducted on 280 CT images. Sex, age changes, symmetry and typology of anatomical structure of mandible were taken into consideration.

Results: According to expectation it was stated that size of mandibular angle changes significantly with age and projects on the location of MF in AP axis. Size of mandibular ramus shows significant relation with the location of MF in transversal and vertical axis. Variability of the location of the mandibular ramus related to its corpus influences significantly on the topography of MF.

Conclusion: Significant variability in the location of MF depending on the rotation of ramus mandibulae along its own axis enables to lead in the correction including location of this foramen at the dental procedures performance in this region.
