A new technique for distraction in alveolar clefts

Clefts are congenital malformations characterized by anatomic division of upper lip, alveolar process, hard and soft palate. It can extend until velopharigeal tissues. Clefts can be complete or incomplete, as well uni or bilateral. Based on distraction concepts, this paper has the objective to present a new method for alveolar cleft treatment. The technique proposed by Puricelli allows for alveolar cleft closure, contribute for anatomical correction of piriform aperture and result in a receptor area for bone grafts. The distraction of a anterior dentoalveolar segment connected to nasal lateral wall offers cleft closure and better nasal base anatomy. The technique is been indicated for patients older than 14 years. It can be performed simultaneously in bilateral clefts. The process offers the opportunity for implant supported prosthetic rehabilitation, improvement of nasal function and favorable aesthetic results.
