Procedure 14-1 USE OF AN ELECTRIC PULP TESTER TO DETERMINE PULP VITALITY

EQUIPMENT
Personal protective equipment
2 × 2 gauze
Saliva ejector
Cotton rolls
Toothpaste
Electric pulp tester
STEPS RATIONALES
1. Assemble equipment. Manufacturers’ instructions must be followed. When the tester rheostat is separate from the applicator tip, an assistant is needed.
2. Review health history. Use of the electric pulp tester is contraindicated for a client with a pacemaker or any electronic life-support device because it can interfere with the device’s function and pose a serious health threat.
3. Describe the test’s purpose and methods. This familiarizes the client with the procedure. For some pulp testers, the client lightly holds the handle with the gloved clinician to complete the circuit.
4. Explain that the client may feel a tingling or a warm sensation.
